Book Giveaway: Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Life

Unfu*kyourself

"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." It's a well-worn parental adage, and a good one for young children. But most of the talking we do is inside our own heads, and it can be unnecessarily brutal. It affects us deeply, and you can't really decide not to say anything to yourself. We can't change our thoughts, but we can change how we act. We can change what we expect and accept. And that begins by introducing some new inner dialogue. Gary John Bishop's new book was written with the goal of helping you do that, changing the internal language we use so we can move on with our lives.

It isn't about encouragement or affirmation, but assertion. It's about doing, and using personal assertions to get out of your own head and out in the world to begin that doing. He provides seven such personal assertions, and a chapter built around each, to do that:

"I am willing."

"I am wired to win."

"I got this."

"I embrace the uncertainty."

"I am not my thoughts; I am what I do."

"I am relentless."
"I expect nothing and accept everything."

Accepting everything does not mean that we are powerless to change our circumstances. What it means is being clear about them, being clear that we're in charge of our lives and can make a change if we wish to. We all have problems, but we also have agency over our lives, and how we frame our problems is one of the most important decisions we make:

It's entirely within our power to determine how we think about and talk about our problems. They can be a nuisance or a stepping stone. They can hold us down or lift us up.

"Where there's a will, there's a way." Another well-worn adage, and for good reason. Because as important as what's going on inside our own head is to how we feel, how we feel isn't ultimately all that important. What we do is. Where self-assertion becomes necessary is when you want to do something new, which we all have to do to grow and evolve, to become more successful. Doing anything new is going to be uncomfortable at first. Once we get over ourselves and step out in the world, we are going to be judged by others. We might even fail. And that is where it becomes important to embrace yet another general truth, that "nothing in life is certain:"

Uncertainty is where things happen. Uncertainty is your pathway to opportunity. It's the environment in which you grow, experience new things, and produce new, unprecedented results. Uncertainty is where new happens.

There are a lot of good, common truths in Gary John Bishop's new book, but they are delivered in an uncommon way. The book has the ability to wake you up to those truths—or, more accurately, gives you the tools to develop that ability.
